New Whitby Galleries Collection: British Wildlife at Night Paintings and More
Discover the enchanting world of British wildlife in my latest collection for Whitby Galleries. Featuring a captivating blend of nocturnal creatures and moonlit landscapes, these paintings offer a serene escape into nature. From playful cats to majestic owls, each artwork tells a unique story. Join me as I share the inspiration behind this collection and the joy of bringing these creatures to life.
Five months have flown by so fast. I can’t quite believe it’s been that long since my last collection of cat paintings arrived at Whitby Galleries. It feels like it was only last month!
It’s always a joy when I get an order from Whitby Galleries, as I pretty much have free reign over what I can paint. There are often a few themes or cat colours to stick to, and this time around is no different — except for the lack of cats! Most of this ten painting collection features familiar British wildlife enjoying the night.
I’ve really enjoyed creating this collection. As much as I love painting cats, dabbling in something a little different brings new ideas and techniques that I can use when I go back to painting kitties. Badgers, foxes, hares, and owls have made rare appearances in the past, but I’ve never painted so many all at once. With an encompassing theme of “the night,” I thought it would be nice to tie them all together with not only the moon but also other elements appearing across all of the paintings.
The moon, in both crescent and full form, is a major feature across all seven paintings. Phthalo blue is another consistent element, which I’ve used for the night sky. Each creature is “nestled” among either wildflowers or woodland foliage. From the sleepy dormouse snug in his nest to the owl surrounded by leaves, each painting evokes a sense of comfort — nature’s hug.
Of course, no Whitby order is complete without a few cats… and this time, a sausage dog! I was specifically asked to include a couple of sailor cats, as they are always quite popular. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with nautical themes. I didn’t know it was possible to both simultaneously love and hate painting something — that’s how I feel about rope. I love adding it to nautical scenes because of the curves and shapes it makes, but it can be so time-consuming and fiddly to paint!
I continued the nautical theme with the dachshund painting since it’s kind of the “odd one out.” The wee sausage is there to round out the number of paintings to ten, so tying it in with the sailor kitties made sense. Rather than having a third sailor, I opted for a beach scene, purely so I could paint a pun on a sausage roll… Sorry!
