The King of Spades - Playing Card Painting

Just when you all thought I couldn’t go any smaller than an ACEO I go and do this! Way back when I was studying design at university we had a project which involved illustrating the centre image of a playing card. Basically you had to pick a card from the deck and then incorporate the suit and number of the card into the image which had to be not the ‘norm’ for a playing card.

The finished illustration had to be presented as it would appear on a playing card but 6 times larger for presentation purposes…… this got me thinking! What would happen if I painted straight on to a playing card? Well…this!

It’s just an ordinary playing card that I had lying about. As it just happened to be the King of Spades I couldn’t resist painting one of my cats as a king and have him wearing a spade collar! When I do my next playing card painting, I’ll take photos of each step so you can see how it’s done. I didn’t want to on this one incase it didn’t work. The actual painted image is only 2.75″ x 1.5″ (67mm x 38mm). The playing card is just slightly smaller than an aceo. It would have been nice if it was the same size…. I suppose it’ll have to do!

I’ll be listing my playing card painting on ebay tomorrow night (15 October 2008). I have however got 2 cat ACEOs which I’ll be listing today.

2 Folk Art Cat ACEOs

The first is an ACEO version of a 5″ x 5″ painting I did earlier in the year called Sink Love. The second ACEO is called Festive Friends. The bidding starts at £4.99 and the auctions last for 7 days. Visit my Ebay Seller Page to view and/or place a bid.

That is a great idea to paint directly on the playing card. It turned out great and you incorporated the card’s elements cleverly. I wouldn’t mind seeing a whole deck done with that theme.
